NEW VOICES BOARD INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
Learn, Experience, Connect & Serve Leaders are the community’s most vital asset. Through a special partnership with the Lake Area United Way (LAUW), Muskogee Chamber of Commerce, Muskogee Nonprofit Resource Center, and Muskogee Young Professionals are expanding opportunities for even more talented leaders to get involved with Muskogee’s extraordinary non profit organizations. Despite several years of focus looking for new board members, Muskogee’s social service agencies are still challenged to find new voices from diverse communities to effectively serve in board roles. The New Voices Board Internship Program will seek to recruit, train, and mobilize a network of talented new board members from under represented Muskogee populations to serve in board leadership roles.
Program Description The New Voices Board Internship Program will provide a year-long experience serving on a board of directors/Advisory Board of a Muskogee area non profit agency. In addition, program participants will gain training in board leadership and responsibilities during an evening workshop in November 2009. Participants must complete an application form, but there is no cost. Who Should Participate Successful candidates: - Will offer a diverse perspective with emphasis on diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds. We are especially seeking African American, Hispanic, Asian/Pacific Islander and Native American participants.
- Have the commitment to serve the non profit sector in a leadership role
- Have time and ability to successfully complete the board internship assignment, including support from employer
- Have not previously served on more than one non profit board of directors
Benefits of Participation You will grow personally. Through the development of personal leadership goals and the support of mentors and other members in the program, participants will discover their leadership potential and gain new insights into themselves as individuals.
You will learn. You will develop leadership skills useful to your non profit board of directors and in your professional life.
You will meet new people - leaders in business and the community. You will get to know your classmates well, forming lifelong friends and community partners.
You will gain new perspectives. Our classes are selected for their diversity of experiences, so you will hear perspectives that are deeply felt, strongly supported and very different from your own. You will have many opportunities to share your experiences and beliefs with others who have not heard your voice before.
You will contribute to the community. There is no greater satisfaction than knowing you have made a difference in the lives of others.
